‘From the Desk of Hercules II’ stamp*: Jamie xx is Here featuring Creep & Sepalcure @ (Le) Poisson Rouge
Last week, LPR hosted a bash to celebrate the release of Jamie xx’s brilliant Gil Scott-Heron remix album, We’re New Here. When we walked in around 10:30, the party was already in full swing, with mainly college-aged attendees present (I mean, it was a Tuesday). Creep were on the decks, playing an awesome mix of UK bass tunes, dirty South hip-hop and generally dancey stuff which included Nguzunguzu’s great remix of Ciara’s “Deuces”. I ventured into the bathroom, and a girl was already throwing up. Oh my.Next up was Sepalcure, who I’d seen before. We were wary they would engage in the same antics, and indeed, they really seem like their own biggest fans when onstage. That said, their set was fantastic. Lots of acid house-like sounds, and they played this amazing remix of Groove Theory’s “Tell Me”. Near us, a girl was doing a Riverdance-like jig, which was hilarious in context. And then, Jamie xx took to the stage. He is only 21, and definitely looked young in person. However, he had complete command of his domain, opening with the first (beautiful) track on We’re New Here, “I’m New Here”. The crowd was really into it, and I was glad to see that this type of music does have an audience here in NYC. He also played a Sepalcure song to show support and even a Cool Kids tune, and it developed an overall eclectic set that proves this kid knows what’s up. Seriously. *And now, I will finally resolve the big mystery surrounding this rather bizarre stamp! When we first walked up to the venue, I asked the door dude what this was all about. “It’s the name of a fish we used to have,” he said. And indeed, right when you walk into LPR (the name of which, y’know, means The Red Fish in French), there is a big fish tank which hangs from the ceiling. So, RIP Hercules, AND Hercules II.
