Dark Allies (Saturday, March 5, 2011)
Hand-drawn ‘P’ & Bruise Wheel creation*: #SPLICETHEPARTY w/ Light Asylum, Mirror Mirror & Ablehearts @ Coco66
On Saturday, we headed to Coco66 in Greenpoint to catch a few NYC-based bands including Light Asylum, who I’d once seen open for Yeasayer and was excited to see again before my move over to the UK. When we arrived, Telfar was DJing, and I was pleased to hear Gucci Mane’s “No No No” make its way into the set. We were a rather large crew, and one of our ranks was the very talented Grant W., who recently directed the music video for Light Asylum’s “Dark Allies” (check it out here!).
At the bar in the front, a dude who we found out books bands for the venue was playing a super fun selection of tunes, which we intermittently enjoyed every time we passed through: Little Dragon’s “My Step”, Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life”, “No Diggity” and the like.
Back in the main space, Mirror Mirror took the stage. Their frontman David Riley (a CHERYL sympathizer) was swaddled in a big mesh-like cape, which members of the audience took off of him and promptly danced underneath. I’d never seen them live, and was stoked to finally get the chance—they were really dynamic, and (pardon my reductive analogizing here) David was perfectly post-Bowie.
We went outside for a few minutes, and there were throngs of people trying to get inside. DP procured a Bruise Wheel out of her bag, and we proceeded to all get made up to look like some shit had gone down. I decided that I was attacked in a parking lot by an evil woman wielding a footlong SUBWAY Club® sandwich. Bitch.
Inside, things had managed to become packed and sweaty. Light Asylum came on, and their exceedingly badass singer Shannon Funchess was wearing her trademark leather daddy cap. They played material off of their In Tension EP, as well as a slew of new songs. My only issue was that so much of their stuff is brooding and moody, I wondered why they were put on last/latest in the night and not Mirror Mirror, who got the crowd dancing more. But then we went to the bar up in the front room and slow danced to “I’ll Make Love to You”, 5th grade style. And all was well.
