Flying dove stamp: Boiler Room #52: Standard Place Takeover w/ Four Tet, Jacques Greene, Oneman, Jon Rust & Reecha @ Corsica Studios
When I heard that Four Tet would be guesting at the Boiler Room, I was ecstatic. After all, I have quite a serious personal investment in his work (partially due to the thingee I wrote about him).
When I was in London earlier this year to look for a flat I attended the last Boiler Room to go down in an undisclosed warehouse in Dalston. Since then, they’ve grown quite substantially, and now the nights take place at Corsica Studios in South London. It’s a little far from where I live, but completely worth it when the names on the bill are this good.
We arrived quite early, figuring the place would be packed. There was a short queue, and we spotted none other than Jamie xx standing a few people ahead of us (in good company). When we got inside, Jacques Greene from the LuckyMe crew was on, and threw in some Ciara “Deuces”—a strong start. Then Jon Rust and Reecha came on, and dropped Boddika’s “When I Dip” and also “Percolator”.
Things were hotting up, to say the least. Our team managed to build a human ladder and plugged in a nearby fan, to the happy surprise of everyone around. Four Tet came to the decks next, wearing his trademark yellow t-shirt and seeming happy and humble as ever. He included, among other things, Burial’s new tune “Street Halo”, Mike Dunn’s “God Made Me Phunky”, Joy Orbison’s “BB”, and—most excitingly—”Ye Ye” by Daphni (Caribou’s incredible side project). I lost it.
Normally it’d be tough to try and follow that act. Yet Oneman was more than up to the challenge, playing a seriously joyous set of party tunes from the likes of Biggie, Dizzee Rascal, and Warren G. Rest in peace.
(Cheers out to Tickle for le photo).
