Happy Motherfuckin’ Birthday! (Friday, April 8, 2011)
FACT & Young Turks @ XOYO
A couple Fridays ago, I got the chance to interview Jackmaster, Ben UFO, and Oneman for a forthcoming feature in XLR8R, which was supremely awesome. And later that evening, I headed down with a full crew to XOYO to see Oneman do a back to back set with Jamie xx. Full circle, innit?
When we arrived, Hyetal was just fiishing up, and the place was heaving. I went into the bathroom to find a girl freaking out, who needed to be carried away by security guards. Eek.
Oneman mentioned to me during the interview that he and Jamie xx planned to start things off with some proper disco, which is exactly what happened. Soon, they went into “I’ll Take Care of U” from Jamie xx’s Gil Scott-Heron remix album, a great remix of Kelis’ “Finest Dreams” which I hadn’t heard before but I severely love that tune, and Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go for That”. The bPm was on the mic and cracking me up as usual; at one point, when something good dropped, he yelled “Happy motherfuckin’ birthday!” and I lost it. The guys continued on, playing “Ring My Bell” and a remix of Four Tet’s “Angel Echoes” (not sure which one!). Overall, it was a majorly eclectic and fun set.
Next up was a special treat. Chicago juke/footwork maestro DJ Rashad came on, and spun a bass-fueled bunch of tracks for our dancing pleasure. A personal highlight was when he played Bristol-based producer Addison Groove’s “Footcrab”, which was initially inspired by the juke/footwork sound. Full circle, innit?
