Handmade glitter stamp: Boiler Room #52: RBMA Takeover w/ Diplo, Jackmaster, Dillon Francis & Lunice @ A warehouse in Dalston
Last week’s Boiler Room was serious business, and was an invite-only affair. Needless to say, I felt immensely special. Easing into it, we ate some pizza beforehand which proved to be…unsatisfying. Not to be deterred, we grabbed a load of Red Stripe and rolled up to Boiler Room’s old East London home, a DIY space-y kind of place in Dalston, where Canadian DJ Lunice was on. The crowd was just gathering, but he was already on fire, playing all sorts of hip-hop and doing hilarious dances behind the decks (he even taught us all how to make a nice soup during his set). One of the guys who owns the venue was walking around in a bathrobe, and it all just felt right.
The headliner for the evening was the incomparable Diplo, who one of our crew overheard telling his manager-ish guy that, if he’d known he was playing at such a “cool” event, might have brought different tracks. He then proceeded to stare intently at his computer for the next hour, for what we hoped was a bit of a tune reshuffle that would result in a Money Studies-era set. Diplo’s protege Dillon Francis came on next, donning a button-down and necktie. He played lots of Moombahton which was fun, but he kept asking for the crowd to cheer and clap, which just wasn’t going to happen so easily with this lot.
Next, Diplo took to the decks, and unfortunately played a set which was extremely similar to the one we’d just heard that weekend in Geneva. Concluding that, sadly, his glory days are basically over, Jackmaster then took to the decks to play an incredibly fun and dancey set that Diplo himself could have put together in his heyday.
P.S. This photo depicts an Easter-related chocolate debaucle that apparently happened in the bathroom right before I entered it.
