No stamp: Gaggle @ Royal Festival Hall
This past Friday was lovely and sunny, so we crossed the crazy looking Hungerford Bridge after work to reach the Southbank Centre, at which Gaggle were to play a gig. I’ve somehow never been to the Southbank Centre before, and I thought it was pretty cool. It reminded me a bit of PS1 in that there are fun outdoor installations, people hanging out everywhere and drinking, and there is various art and music stuff going on indoors.
We found our way to the stage, which was situated right inside the massive lobby of one of the buildings. This was cool because, while many people had come deliberately to check out the band, others just happened by and joined the audience. It was free, so why not?
I’ve been wanting to see Gaggle for ages. They’re a giant all-female choir that wear wacky costumes and sing about drinking and guitars (plus, one of their members is a good friend of a good friend). They came out walking in a straight line, and performed bits of an opera from 1969 entitled “The Brilliant and the Dark”, which looks at world history through the eyes of various female characters like witch hunters and embroiderers. Sweet. They were wearing these incredible outfits, which reminded me a lot of Marcel Dzama’s work. They then had a costume change, and came out to sing original material including this gem, “I Hear Flies”. Charming, truly.
