Neon orange wristband: The Boiler Room 1st Birthday @ Corsica Studios
To celebrate their one year anniversary, the good folks at the Boiler Room assembled an unreal, heavy lineup and for the first time charged an entry fee/issued tickets to the event at Corsica Studios. It felt pretty crazy that a year had passed: I remember being at work in New York and watching the show online, trying to spot friends in the crowd back when it was still in Dalston (and even before that, when it was in Hackney Downs).
Needless to say, it was very crowded, and the overall mood was jolly. Stretched across two rooms, it felt like every minute there was a serious choice to make about who to see. We caught part of Mount Kimbie’s lovely (as ever) set, saw Kutmah spin a few tunes, and were happy to learn that, while Jamie xx couldn’t be there, Four Tet had stepped in to take his slot.
A huge personal highlight for me was the three hour back-to-back-to-back set from Jackmaster, Oneman and Ben UFO, since I recently wrote this piece on them for XLR8R. They are all truly incredible, and my love of Jackmaster was heightened by his inclusion of this tune. Always keeps ‘em guessing.
Happy birthday Boiler Room, you are paving the way for the future.
P.S. Pictured above: incredible bathroom graffiti.
